Flytipping - Beware the 'Man With A Van'

Online services such as Facebook Marketplace, Gumtree and Craigslist have made it easy to find a "man with a van" when you need some waste removing on the cheap.

However, these ads rarely carry an individual's or company name, making it hard to find out if they are licenced to carry and dispose of your waste. If they subsequently fly-tip your rubbish, you could find yourself fined or even taken to court.

Remember the following tips:-
  • Ask the contact if they are a registered waste carrier. If they are, ask for their registration number and name and check here. If they are not registered, do not use them.
  • Remember, the vast majority of waste items can still be taken to a household recycling centre free of charge.
  • Extra recycling will be taken at the kerbside, provided it is separated properly (no glass mixed with other recycling) and placed in a sturdy container.
We are also planning to ramp up our enforcement efforts across the county soon, giving us even more resources to investigate fly-tip incidents and find the criminals who take part in this anti-social activity.
